Dr Evangeline Shalou is a fertility specialist and gynaecologist consulting at City Fertility in Jolimont. She graduated from the University of Western Sydney with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 2011 and went on to complete her obstetrics and gynaecology training across major hospitals in Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne. During this time, she also earned a Master of Reproductive Medicine from the University of New South Wales.

Following specialist training, Dr Shalou completed a two-year fellowship in Reproductive Medicine at the Royal Women’s Hospital, where she strengthened her expertise in fertility assessment, IVF, and complex reproductive conditions.

Dr Shalou provides care across both public and private sectors, including appointments at The Northern Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospital, where she contributes to the Victorian Public Fertility Care Service. She is committed to teaching and mentoring junior doctors and medical students.

She supports individuals and couples with diverse fertility needs, including LGBTQ+ families and single patients, with a particular interest in recurrent miscarriage and PCOS. Her care philosophy is centred on collaboration, tailoring each treatment plan to the individual and empowering patients to take an active role in their fertility journey.

Q&A with
Dr Eva Shalou

BOOK APPOINTMENT
1. What inspired you to specialise in fertility and reproductive medicine?

Dr Shalou: I have been privileged through my work as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to see the miracle of birth. However, I have also came across both professionally and personally the heartbreak of not being able to have a baby. Currently, about 1 in 6 couples in Australia face infertility and the numbers are unfortunately rising.

Therefore, something that is important to me is empowering patients to understand their bodies, their choices, and feel enabled to make informed decisions about their fertility.

This led me to pursue a fellowship at the Royal Women’s Hospital, where I developed skills in reproductive medicine and IVF.

2. How do you support patients throughout their fertility and IVF journey?

Dr Shalou: I understand that the journey to parenthood for some can be an incredibly isolating, emotional and complex experience. It is often filled with uncertainty and heartbreak. I try to care for my patients by truly listening and acknowledging the emotional as well as physical challenges of fertility care.

3. How would you describe your style of patient care?

Dr Shalou: My style of patient care is very patient-centred and supportive. By caring for wellbeing alongside clinical outcomes, my goal is for every patient to feel heard, informed, and empowered to make choices that align with their needs and values.

4. What are your primary clinical interests?

Dr Shalou: My key interests include fertility and IVF care, recurrent miscarriage, PCOS, and fertility preservation.

I am particularly committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for patients from diverse backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ individuals and single people exploring their fertility options.

5. How do you contribute to broader women’s health beyond clinical practice?

Dr Shalou: I work in the Victorian Public Fertility Care Service and contribute to initiatives to improve access to fertility care. Through my roles in public hospitals, I am also involved in supporting women at all stages of life, from obstetrics through to menopause care. I actively participate in ongoing education, training, and clinical governance initiatives that enhance the quality of women’s healthcare.
