Q&A with
Dr Bernadette McElhinney
Dr McElhinney: After training in the UK and moving to Perth in 2004, I gained advanced surgical fellowship experience at KEMH. This enabled me to develop expertise in laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis and pelvic pain, a skill set I continue to offer today.
Dr McElhinney: As part of FSWA, I offer comprehensive fertility care: assessment and treatment of reproductive conditions like endometriosis or fibroids, surgical interventions, plus IVF and donor conception services, all tailored to individuals’ goals and needs.
Dr McElhinney: I serve as an associate professor at Notre Dame University and regularly deliver medical tutorials, supervise trainees, and lecture at national and international meetings, all aimed at passing on surgical and clinical expertise. In KEMH we have a fellow who spends 2 years on our team, gaining advanced laparoscopic skills prior to completing their training and starting work as a consultant.
Dr McElhinney: I treat each individual as unique, listening closely, respecting their stories, and providing information so they feel informed, empowered, and supported throughout their fertility or gynaecology journey. I like a holistic approach and always like to explore all options, rather than just surgery or ART.
Dr McElhinney: My chief interests include fertility care, surgical and medical management of endometriosis and fibroids, menstrual disorders, and colposcopy-based diagnosis and treatment of cervical abnormalities. I am also passionate about training junior colleagues and being actively involved with audits and research including preparation of presentations and publications.
Dr McElhinney: I am a director of Menopause Alliance Australia, where I help support education and resources for menopause care, reflecting my commitment to lifelong health for women. I am also a board member of Hologic which is a company that is passionate about supporting Women’s health and supporting and developing emerging technologies. I regularly partake in presentations to different consumer groups.
