What is Genetic Carrier Screening?

Genetic testing is important because abnormal chromosomes can stop an embryo from implanting on the uterine lining or result in a miscarriage or the birth of a child with physical and/or mental disabilities. Testing can help prevent these outcomes by identifying the affected embryos during their development in the laboratory before they are transferred back to a patient’s uterus during an IVF cycle.
What does the rebate include?
Starting from November 1st, this new initiative will benefit 112,000 people annually, offering 34 new, expanded, or increased Medicare rebates for genetic testing. These rebates are designed to diagnose, prevent, and treat various genetic conditions. For prospective parents, the rebate covers Genetic Carrier Screening for conditions such as cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, and fragile X syndrome.
Each parent will be eligible for a rebate of between $300-$340 for the test, depending on whether the testing is conducted within or outside a hospital setting.
This is part of a substantial $148.5 million investment over four years to strengthen Medicare, making healthcare more affordable and accessible. Unlike most other genetic tests funded by Medicare, these new rebates are available to everyone, including individuals with no symptoms or family history of these conditions.
