He is dedicated to helping people achieve their dream of parenthood and guiding them through fertility treatment with clarity and compassion.

He works in IVF and fertility care, gynaecology, and early pregnancy, offering personalised treatment plans rooted in the latest evidence and best practices.

Professor Ledger brings over 30 years of experience in fertility, obstetrics, and gynaecology. He leads the fertility research group at the University of New South Wales, has published widely—including over 370 peer-reviewed papers and journal articles, more than 50 book chapters, and contributed to 18 books—and continues to bring modern advances in reproductive science into clinical practice. He is also known by many grateful patients as the ‘friendly face of IVF.’

He has a long standing interest in safety of ART procedures and was Chair of ISMAAR-7, the first Australian meeting of the International Society for Mild Approaches in ART, held in September 2014 in Sydney. In 2017 – 2018 he Chaired the Australian Federal Government ART Working Group that reviewed the Medical Benefits System (MBS) funding for IVF and related technologies and is a Member of the MBS Gynaecology Committee. He was a Member of the NHMRC Committee to review the National Guidelines on Ethics of ART, which reported in 2017. He Chaired the RANZCOG Research Assessment Committee in 2020-2023 and remains a member of this committee.
In 2025 he was one of three specialists to be awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand.

He holds specialist qualifications in reproductive medicine and infertility, including Fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK), and both Australian and UK subspecialist accreditation in Reproductive Medicine and IVF (CREI). He provides all aspects of LGBTQ+ fertility treatment—from donor cycles (eggs, sperm, embryos) to surrogacy—offering telehealth appointments for convenience.

Q&A with
Professor William Ledger

1. You’ve been called “the friendly face of IVF”, what advice do you give to patients navigating fertility treatment?

Prof Ledger: “Keep an open mind about IVF’s chances. Use resources like ANZARD and Your IVF Success, consider a second opinion, and engage with counselling. And remember, it’s OK to pause or stop if it feels too much.”

2. Which developments in fertility medicine have you witnessed as most impactful?

Prof Ledger: “The switch to blastocyst culture and vitrification dramatically improved IVF outcomes overnight, frozen transfers now have success rates comparable to fresh transfers. PGTA has significantly reduced chances of miscarriage or a chromosome abnormality in the child after IVF, and improved the chance of pregnancy in a single IVF cycle ”

3. What research contributions are you most proud of?

Prof Ledger: “Participating in early GnRH antagonist trials helped halve rates of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Agonist trigger protocols have now practically eliminated severe OHSS, that’s meaningful, patient-centered progress.”

4. Can you describe how your academic roles inform your clinical work?

Prof Ledger: “Leading fertility medicine teaching at UNSW and clinical units at the Royal Hospital for Women ensures I stay at the interface of evidence, policy, and real-world care, sharing that knowledge with patients and trainees.”

5. What changes do you foresee in fertility medicine over the next 20 years?

Prof Ledger: “We’re seeing more egg and embryo freezing as people delay pregnancy. We may develop dietary approaches to slow egg ageing, better treatments for male infertility, less reliance on injections, and even non-invasive embryo screening in the lab.”
